About the Asia Kakehashi Project+ Scholarship:
The AFS Intercultural Programs Philippines offers the Asia Kakehashi Project, a full scholarship funded by the Government of Japan for Filipino high school students. The scholarship covers tuition, travel, housing, and a stipend. Students will live with a host family or in a dormitory while attending a Japanese high school, gaining cultural experience and leadership skills.
Eligibility:
The Asia KAKEHASHI Project+ Scholarship offers Filipino students a unique opportunity to study in Japan and experience cultural immersion. To qualify, applicants must meet the following criteria:
General Eligibility
- Must be a Filipino citizen residing in the Philippines at the time of application, selection, and preparation for travel.
- Must have spent more than 50% of the last five years in the Philippines and have current family plans to return after the program.
- Must be between 15 and 18 years old, born after April 2, 2007, and before April 1, 2010.
- Must not have previously traveled to Japan for leisure or another scholarship program.
Academic Requirements
- Must be among the top 25% of academic performance in their grade level.
- Must have obtained a minimum of 60% marks in all subjects in the latest school examination and an overall minimum average of 60% for the past two years.
- Grades from school years 2022-2023, 2023-2024, and 2024-2025 (at least for the 1st or 2nd grading period) must be indicated in the Academic Record & Transcript.
Japanese Language and Cultural Engagement
- Must be a learner of Japanese.
- Participants in Japanese speech contests are encouraged to apply and will be given priority in the selection process.
- Proof of speech contest awards must be submitted along with the Academic Records & Transcript Form.
- Must be committed to cultural immersion in Japan through a homestay or dormitory experience.
- Must be willing to share their experience with their home and community upon returning.
Personal and Social Attributes
- Must have strong academic and social skills, openness, and flexibility.
- Must be sufficiently healthy to participate in the program.
- Must be mature, adaptable, and open-minded in facing cross-cultural challenges.
- Must demonstrate strong leadership potential to act as a bridge between the Philippines and Japan during and after the program.
Additional Notes
- Priority will be given to students from low-income families.
- Applicants who have previously participated in the Asia Kakehashi Project Scholarship are not eligible.

- Alternates will be considered if a finalist withdraws or fails to meet requirements.
- March 28 – April 11, 2025: Full Application Submission (For finalists & alternates)
- April 20, 2025: Transfer of Applications to Japan
