Qualifications:
To qualify for the MEXT College of Technology Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Nationality:
- Applicants must be from a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan.

- Applicants must meet one of the following conditions:
- Japanese Language:
- Applicants must be willing to learn Japanese and study in Japanese at KOSEN.
- Health:
- Applicants must submit a health certificate signed by a physician confirming that they have no physical or mental conditions hindering their studies in Japan.
- Arrival in Japan:
- Applicants must be able to arrive in Japan between April 1, 2026, and April 7, 2026.
- Visa Requirement:
- Applicants must obtain a “Student” visa and enter Japan with this status.
- Non-Eligibility:
- Applicants who fall under certain categories, such as military personnel, those who cannot arrive in Japan on time, previous MEXT grantees, or those applying for multiple MEXT scholarships, are ineligible.
- Other Conditions:
- Applicants must contribute to mutual understanding between Japan and their home country and engage in activities promoting international relations during and after their studies.

Allowance:
- Monthly allowance of 117,000 yen.
- Supplemental regional allowance of 2,000 yen or 3,000 yen per month for grantees studying in specially designated regions.
- The allowance amount may change each fiscal year based on the Japanese government’s budget.
- The scholarship will be suspended if the grantee is absent from the national institute of technology (KOSEN) or preparatory educational institution for an extended period.
Education Fees:
- Fees for the entrance examination, matriculation, and tuition at KOSEN and the preparatory educational institution are waived.
Traveling Expenses:
- Transportation to Japan:
MEXT provides an economy-class airline ticket for the grantee from the nearest international airport in the home country to Japan.
The grantee bears costs for domestic travel, airport taxes, special taxes, insurance, and other travel-related expenses within Japan.- If the grantee needs to travel to a third country before arriving in Japan (due to visa requirements or lack of direct flights), MEXT will cover the airfare from the home country to Japan via a third country, while the grantee covers other related costs.
- Transportation from Japan:
MEXT provides an economy-class airline ticket for the grantee’s return from Japan to their home country after graduation, if they return by the end of the scholarship period.
The grantee will be responsible for travel costs from their residence in Japan to the airport, as well as additional travel and baggage-related expenses.- MEXT will not cover the return travel expenses if the grantee leaves before the end of the scholarship period or stays in Japan for further education or employment after the scholarship ends.

Applicants must select a preferred field of study from the following options:
- (A) Mechanical Engineering
- (B) Electrical and Electronic Engineering
- (C) Information, Communication and Network Engineering
- (D) Materials Engineering
- (E) Architecture
- (F) Civil Engineering
- (G) Maritime Engineering
- (H) Other Fields
You may select a first, second, and third choice of these fields.
2. Select Majors Elements
Once you have chosen a field of study, you need to choose from the majors elements listed in the Annex “Majors and Related Key Terms for Fields of Study.” Make sure to choose the corresponding major(s) under your selected field(s).
Notes:
- (H) Other Fields: You can combine “Other Fields” with any of the other fields of study. For instance, you can choose “(A) Mechanical Engineering” with “(H) Other Fields.”
- Materials Engineering: Applicants applying for “(D) Materials Engineering” cannot choose it with any other field, except for “(H) Other Fields.”
- Maritime Engineering: Applicants applying for “(G) Maritime Engineering” must have a vision of 0.5 or more in each eye (with or without glasses) and must not be colorblind.
- Other Fields: If you choose “(H) Other Fields,” you may face difficulties finding a national institute of technology (KOSEN) that can accept you. It’s recommended to select another field in combination with “(H) Other Fields.”

Here are the Important dates for the MEXT College of Technology Scholarship.
Deadline: May 23, 2025 (Friday).
Period of Scholarship:
- Duration: The scholarship lasts four years, from April 2026 to March 2030, which includes one year of preparatory education in Japanese language and other subjects.
- For Maritime Engineering Majors: The scholarship period extends to four and a half years, ending in September 2030.
Extension of Scholarship Period:
- If a grantee graduates from a national institute of technology (KOSEN) and is accepted for enrollment in an advanced course at a national institute of technology (KOSEN) or a Japanese national university as a third-year transfer student, and if they meet certain academic criteria, the scholarship may be extended after a successful examination by MEXT.
- Note: Transfer students enrolled at public or private universities are not eligible for an extension.

- MEXT conducts the Second Screening and selects the final grantees.
- Final Results:
- Final selection results will be communicated by the Japanese diplomatic mission by January 2026.
- The reasons for the decision are not disclosed, and no objections regarding placement decisions will be accepted.
