The MEXT undergraduate scholarship offers an excellent opportunity to study for up to five or seven years at a Japanese college or university.

Qualifications:

To qualify for the MEXT undergraduate scholarship, applicants must:

  1. Nationality: Applicants must have the nationality of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan.
  2. Age Requirement: Applicants must be born on or after April 2, 2000.
  3. Educational Requirement: Applicants must have graduated from high school by March of the year of departure.
  4. Language Requirement: Applicants must learn and receive instruction in the Japanese language.

Benefits:

The MEXT undergraduate scholarship offers several advantages:

  • Monthly Allowance: Recipients receive 117,000 yen per month. An additional regional allowance of 2,000 or 3,000 yen is provided for those studying in specially designated areas.
  • Education Fees: MEXT covers fees for entrance examinations, matriculation, and tuition at universities.

Requirements:

Applicants for the MEXT undergraduate scholarship must submit the following documents:

  2. Direct Placement Preference Form
  3. Academic Transcripts from the school or university of the applicant
  4. Certificates of Graduation from schools/universities attended
  5. Recommendation Letter from a class teacher or principal of the last school attended
  6. Medical Certificate
  7. Certificate of Enrollment
  8. Certificate of University Enrollment Qualification Examination
  9. Certificate of Language Proficiency
  10. Agreement on Document Submission

Field of Study:

Applicants for the MEXT undergraduate scholarship must choose a Field of Study (either “Social Sciences and Humanities” or “Natural Sciences”), along with a Course and Major(s) from the tables below. You can indicate a first, second, and third choice.

Social Sciences and Humanities

Courses: Social Sciences and Humanities – A

Majors:

  1. Law
  2. Politics
  3. Pedagogy
  4. Sociology
  5. Literature
  6. History
  7. Japanese Language
  8. Others (excluding “1. Economics”, “2. Business Administration” and “3.Others” in Humanities B.)

Courses: Social Sciences and Humanities – B

  1. Economics
  2. Business Administration
  3. Others (Accounting, Financial
    economics, etc.)

Note: Applicants choosing “8. Others” in Humanities – A may have difficulty finding universities that accept them based on their majors. Fields in the arts aimed at gaining practical skills, including music, are not eligible for application.

Applicants for the MEXT undergraduate scholarship must choose a Field of Study within Natural Sciences. Below are the available courses and majors:

Students accepted into a preparatory educational institution will receive a scholarship for five years, spanning from April 2025 to March 2030. This includes one year dedicated to learning Japanese and other subjects upon arrival in Japan.

For those pursuing degrees in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, or a six-year pharmacy course, the scholarship extends to seven years, ending in March 2032.

Important Note: If the university term starts in the middle of the month, the scholarship will not cover that month. For instance, if the autumn term begins between September 2 and September 30, 2025, the scholarship will officially start in October 2025. ➡️Read Mext important dates
